Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s attempt to flea the long arms of the law were naught as police nabbed him around Voi, the DCI and EACC have confirmed.
Sonko was arrested barely 4 hours after the Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji ordered for his arrest.
Sonko is expected to be charged with abuse of office and failure to comply with procurement laws and regulations in the manner in which contracts and payments were awarded. The county is said to have lost about 327 million.
According to investigations that were done, some contractors who were not even qualified for garbage collection were awarded contracts and would later wire money bank to accounts linked to the Governor.
Sonko on his part has insisted he is fighting cartels and that the said cartels are fighting him back in the investigations being carried out against his government.
He even alleged that the purchase of the EACC building was corruptly done and that the building itself sits on grabbed public land, threatening to demolish it.
It is expected the Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi will take over the functions of the office of Governor until Sonko successfully fights of the graft charges against him.
