Kiambu Governor Ferdinand ‘Baba Yao’ Waititu was today fired from the job by 63 MCAs on a motion led by Ndenderu MCA Solomon Kinuthia who, among other issues, accused the the governor of misconduct and abuse of office. One MCA voted against the impeachment motion, while 28 MCAs were absent.
He was charged with gross violation of the Constitution, County Government Act, Public Procurement and Disposal Act as well as the Public Finance Management Act.
Waititu was accused of giving tenders to relatives and friends who ran proxy companies to cheat the system. He was also accused of failure to comply with procurement procedures.
Another charge was of hiring over 600 casuals without the involvement of the County Public Service Board before later firing them. According to the MCAs this exposed the county to risk of multiple suits and loss of public funds.
On abuse of office, the MCAs accused Waititu of violating the Constitution of Kenya by forcefully dispossessing and unlawfully occupying the property of Cecilia Njoki Mbugua, a Thika widow.
