Ruto must go seems to be the mood as the year ends. The Jubilee Party has announced that it will block any persons who are implicated in corruption in running for any political positions on the party’s ticket.
The decision was announced by Jubilee Party Secretary General Raphael Tuju and was later confirmed by Party Vice-Chairman and President Uhuru Kenyatta cousin David Murathe.
Mr Tuju said the party will enforce President Uhuru Kenyatta’s zero tolerance to corruption and ensure only honest members are elected to various positions. This was during an exclusive interview with the Daily Nation.
“You cannot abet corruption and say you are a staunch member of Jubilee yet the party advocates for zero tolerance to corruption in its manifesto,” said Mr Tuju.
While the announcement is welcome in the ongoing purge against corruption, it is largely seen to be targeting the Deputy president who has so far been made the ‘face of corruption’.
The DP has been mentioned in several allegations of corruptions and while the DCI nor the EACC have launched any investigations into the DP directly, his allies and businesses are under deep scrutiny and so far CS Rotich, Governors Sonko and Waititu among many others have been charged in court over charges including abuse of office, failure to adhere to procurement laws, money laundering and misappropriation of public funds.
With this new requirement in the Jubilee party, the party would have the discretion to involve the DCI and the EACC to investigate any persons wishing for the party’s tickets in the 2022 elections. Being a political party, it would be expected that the lengths, depths and results of any such investigations would also be political.
According to Murathe, the party is keen to enforce it’s on laws on ethics and integrity as well as adhere to the Constitution’s chapter 6 on Ethics and Integrity. All of these sound nice to the electorate only that when a keen eye is given to the purported investigations, the target is central, to ensure DP William Ruto does not run on the Jubilee ticket for 2022 elections.
Ruto stands judged that he illegally acquired someone’s land and was ordered to return it. His links to those charged in courts so far while not public, are no secret to the DCI and the EACC who handled the investigations. His hotel, Weston Hotel also stands judged that it sits on public land. KCAA are emboldened to pursue a suit for the demolition of the hotel and restoration of the land to its owner, the government.
It seems Ruto is facing a situation where he will soon lack both political support and financial might to mount any presidential campaigns.
