More than 1800 inmates are sad to have escaped from prison after an attack by gunmen.
According to the BBC report the gunmen were armed with rocket propelled grenades, machine guns, explosives and riffles.
The attackers entered the prison yard after using explosives to blast the administrative block of the prison.
The incident happened in the Soitheastern town of Owerri which is about 400km Southeast of Nigeria’s capital, Lagos.
The Nigerian Correctional Service confirmed that 1,844 inmates escaped after the attack.
Nigerian police believe that the attack was conducted by banned separatist group who are he indigenous people of Biafra but the Agence France Presse reported hat the group denied involvement.
There have been attacks on several police stations in Southeastern Nigeria since January.
Large rounds of ammunition have been stolen during these attacks.
No groups have claimed responsibility for the attacks.
