Today marks a new a historical moment in the journey of Safaricom, a major telecommunication company in Kenya. Peter Ndegwa who is the first Kenyan to become the Chief Executive Officer of the company takes over from the acting CEO Michael Joseph who stepped in in acting capacity after the death of the former CEO Bob Collymore.
Bob Collymore succumbed to camcer in July 2019.
Ndegwa’s appointment was announced in October 24th 2019 and his term was to commence on April 1st 2020.
Peter Ndegwa joins Safaricom from Diageo PLC, where he was the managing director of Diageo Continental Europe.
“We are confident that Peter will carry on our vision of transforming lives while keeping us focused on meeting our customers’ needs and holding us to our new commitment of being simple, transparent and honest,” board chairman Nicholas Ng’ang’a said.
The new CEO has been participating in Safaricom’s meetings and engaging with the board for the last two months ahead of his official dutie.
The acting CEO, Michael Joseph said he will guide him through for the next few months.
Safaricom accounts for 64.8 % of mobile subscriptions in Kenya. It has 34.1 million subscribers in a market that has a total subscription of 53.2 million – CA data. It is followed by Airtime with 14 million subscribers, Telkom (3.3 million) and Equitel with 1.7 million.
