Twitter And Facebook placed warning labels on posts from President Donald Trump but they did not remove the posts.
The post encouraged Americans to vote by mail as early as they could and then follow up their vote by going to the polls on the election day to check if the poll was counted.
NORTH CAROLINA: To make sure your Ballot COUNTS, sign & send it in EARLY. When Polls open, go to your Polling Place to see if it was COUNTED. IF NOT, VOTE! Your signed Ballot will not count because your vote has been posted. Don’t let them illegally take your vote away from you!”wrote president Trump
This would actually cause unnecessary long queues and increased exposure to more people in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.
Twitter placed a banner on the tweet saying it violated Twitter Rules about civic and election integrity but kept the post noting that it may be in the public’s interest.
Facebook on the other hand placed a banner underneath the post with a link to their voting information center. They also added a note that read, “Voting by mail has a long history of trustworthiness in the U.S. and the same is predicted this year.”
In response to President Trump’s tweet, North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein tweeted asking North Carolina residents not to do what the president said adding that voting twice is a felony.
NORTH CAROLINA: Do NOT do what the President directs. To make sure your ballot COUNTS, sign and send it in EARLY. Then track it ONLINE with BALLOTTRAX. Do NOT vote twice (it’s a felony), or waste your time, or unnecessarily risk exposure to more people.Josh Stein tweeted.
According to Patrick Gannon, a public information officer at North Carolina State Board of Elections, voters in North Carolina do not need to go to the polls to check if their vote has been counted.
There are three ways in which voters can track the status of their ballots.
They can use BalloTrax, they can also contact their county board of elections or search the voter search tool on the board’s website which will show when a voter’s ballot has been accepted.
