The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.Martin Luther King, Jr
A true neighbor will risk his position, his prestige, and even his life for the welfare of others. What do you do in your times of comfort and convenience? That is what defines your life.
Climbing the highest mountain has become simple, it requires the very best of you to be able to get to the top. One mountain climber said, “To get to the top you have to look deep inside yourself and figure out if you have the mental and physical toughness to push when you want to stop.”
To succeed, you just have to continually hit the wall until you finally breakthrough. There are always a thousands of reasons to turn around and give up but only one to keep you going. Just because you said you would, is the only reason to keep you going.
Climbing down a mountain is more dangerous than climbing up. This is because when you are climbing up, the struggle has your full attention. According to statistics, many deaths that occur during mountain climbing occur during the descent. This is because when you are climbing up, the struggle has your full attention, you are therefore forced to focus, forced to dig deep inside yourself and forced to push yourself.
On the descent, you tend to relax. you lose focus and you do not summon all that you have. You become become lazy. Your adrenaline becomes lower and your concentration is less. You let complacency set in or allow overconfidence set in. That is when more deaths occur.
This is a reflection of exactly what happens in life. It is easy to pay attention to your loved ones when they are in crisis. It is easier to cut sugar and carbs from your diet when you are diagnosed with diabetes or when you are a month away from your wedding.
When it comes to business, it is easy to cut costs when you run out of money and you can’t pay your bank loans. It is easier to let go of unproductive people when you are forced to do layoffs. It is easier to focus on customer experience when you get a PR crisis.
Companies and people fall when they stop summoning the best that they have. They fall when they stop pushing, when they stop innovating and when they lose focus.
Many people create success then fall into failure again. Rise up create success and fall into failure again. This happens over and over if one does not keep focusing on what got them to the top. If they only kept doing what they did in order to create success while they were successful, they would not only sustain success but they would have it multiplied.
It is not the climb that will kill you but the descent. So what should you do in order to avoid falling to death.
- Be as vigilant when times are good as you are when they are bad. Never stop doing what you did to become successful. This is the only thing that will keep you at the top.
- Keep your focus, keep digging deep, keep pushing yourself always. It is always good to keep innovating otherwise your business will die.
This applies to both life and business.
The best time to repair the roof is when it is sunny outside, when it starts to rain it is too late but often, that is the only time people wake up to the repair of the house.
Everytime function that you perform in a turn around situation is what needs to be done always. In business it would mean intelligent cost cutting, trimming your product lines and focusing on your winners. Streamlining your internal processes, staying close to your customers, investing in the development of your people and pushing for innovation. You have to keep growing, otherwise you will die.
In your personal life, you need to assess and improve your diet, prioritising and trimming your expenses, prioritising your relationships, growing your investments, refining your goals, plans and work methods. It means pushing yourself for continual improvement. If you aren’t improving you are falling behind.
In all these, just remember, while the ascent is thrilling and adrenaline filled, it is during the descent, when the pressure is off where 73% of people fall to their death. Stay vigilant.
